METU Food Engineering

Faculty of Engineering

METU Food Engineering is a chemistry- and microbiology-focused engineering department covering a broad process from food production and processing to food safety and shelf life. Courses such as food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing technologies, and food safety and regulations form the foundation of the curriculum.

The department places heavy emphasis on lab work (food analyses, microbiological testing), and students typically get an early introduction to the industry through internships at production facilities. Food safety standards (such as HACCP and ISO) and quality control processes occupy a significant place in the curriculum.

Graduates can work in R&D and quality control units at food production companies, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, food inspection/safety agencies, or in academia. Since the food sector is always in demand, the department offers relatively stable job security.

Anyone choosing this department should have an interest in chemistry and biology, enjoy lab work, and have a meticulous nature that values attention to detail and hygiene.
