METU Civil Engineering

METU Civil Engineering, one of the core engineering disciplines, is one of the most well-established departments in the Faculty of Engineering. With a curriculum covering statics, strength of materials, reinforced concrete, soil mechanics, structural engineering, and transportation engineering, it teaches the design, calculation, and construction of nearly every type of infrastructure and structure — buildings, bridges, dams, and roads.

The department builds on core engineering courses (statics, dynamics, materials science) and later branches into specialization areas such as structures, geotechnics, transportation, water resources, and construction management. Fieldwork and internships are an important part of the department — you get to see early on how a buildings calculations on paper compare to reality on an actual construction site.

Graduates can work at construction companies, in the technical units of public institutions (highway authorities, water management authorities, municipalities), at consulting firms, on international projects, or in academia. Thanks to signing authority and internationally recognized diploma value, job opportunities are quite broad.

Anyone choosing this department should enjoy mathematics and physics, be comfortable with fieldwork/construction site environments, and not shy away from taking responsibility on large-scale projects.
