METU Chemical Engineering is one of the heaviest-workload departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Courses such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, and separation processes demand both theoretical depth and intensive problem-solving practice. Much of the week is spent on homework and project deadlines, and during exam periods, this departments students make up a large share of those pulling all-nighters in the library.

The department deals with the design and optimization of production processes across nearly every sector — petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, energy, and the environment. In short, it seeks answers to the question of how a small-scale lab reaction can be made safe and efficient at full factory scale. This requires both solid chemistry knowledge and an engineering/design mindset at the same time.

Graduates work at refineries and petrochemical plants, pharmaceutical companies, food engineering roles, the energy sector, or in academia. While job opportunities are broad, the department itself demands serious effort and discipline all the way to graduation.

Anyone choosing this department should be prepared for a heavy course load and constant problem-solving, should genuinely enjoy chemistry and mathematics, and shouldnt be discouraged by long working hours — for someone looking for an easy department, Chemical Engineering may not be the right choice.
