METU Chemistry Education, part of the Faculty of Education, combines both the science of chemistry and teacher training/pedagogical formation. Students take core chemistry courses (organic, inorganic, physical chemistry, though somewhat lighter than in the Chemistry department), while also taking courses in educational sciences, teaching methods, and classroom management.
The most distinctive feature of this department is that it combines both laboratory and classroom/practicum experience. Students carry out chemistry experiments and write reports, but in their final years they also complete real teaching practicums at a high school — meaning you are a student on one hand, and an instructor standing in front of a classroom on the other.
Graduates can work as chemistry teachers at public or private high schools, be appointed to Ministry of National Education positions after the relevant civil service exam (KPSS), or work in other areas of the education sector such as developing educational materials or assessment and evaluation. Some also continue into academia with a masters in educational sciences or chemistry education.
Anyone choosing this department should love chemistry while also genuinely enjoying teaching others, should be patient, and shouldnt be uncomfortable speaking in front of a group.
