METU English Language Teaching
Faculty of Education
METU English Language Teaching, part of the Faculty of Education, combines English linguistics with teacher training. Alongside courses in linguistics, literature, and second language acquisition, pedagogy courses such as teaching methods, assessment and evaluation, and classroom management form an important part of the curriculum. Most courses are taught in English.
The department builds both language skills (speaking, writing, grammatical analysis) and methodological knowledge of how to teach a language. In the final years, students complete a real teaching practicum at a school, gaining experience teaching English in front of a classroom.
Graduates can work as English teachers at public or private schools, teach at language courses, be appointed to Ministry of National Education positions after the relevant civil service exam (KPSS), or move into fields such as translation or language consulting.
Anyone choosing this department should have a genuine interest in English and linguistics, love teaching, and not be uncomfortable speaking in front of a group.
