METU Sociology is a verbally/analytically oriented department that systematically examines society, social institutions, and human relationships. Part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, it covers a broad range of topics including social theory, research methods (quantitative and qualitative), gender, migration, urbanization, class, and inequality.
The department requires a great deal of reading and writing — dense course readings, discussion seminars, and field research (surveys, interviews, observation) form an important part of the curriculum. There are also quantitative courses (statistics, research methods), but the emphasis leans more toward conceptual/theoretical thinking and written expression skills.
Graduates may continue into academia, or work at non-governmental organizations, development agencies, public institutions research units, media and publishing, human resources, and market research fields.
Anyone choosing this department should be genuinely curious about social issues, enjoy reading extensively, and be open to critically analyzing complex, multidimensional problems.
