METU Psychology, part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, is — contrary to popular belief — not about "reading people," but a fairly quantitative department grounded in experimental methodology. In the early years, courses like statistics, research methods, and experimental design dominate the curriculum — so those who come in expecting "I will understand what the person across from me is thinking" may be surprised to find the department is actually a scientific discipline.
The department branches into subfields such as cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. METU takes a research-oriented approach, meaning both those who want to become therapists and those who want to become academics/researchers tend to be satisfied with the program. A masters degree is generally required for clinical practice (the authority to conduct therapy).
Graduates may continue into academia with a masters/PhD, work in fields such as human resources, UX research, or market research, or pursue a career in clinical therapy after completing a masters in clinical psychology.
Anyone choosing this department shouldnt be afraid of statistics and data analysis, and should be curious and open to critical thinking — "I want to understand people" is a nice starting motivation, but you also need to genuinely enjoy the scientific/experimental side of the field.
