Physics is one of the basic sciences that people find both most fascinating and most intimidating. Ask anyone and theyll tell you physics is a difficult department. But if you have genuine interest and put in the effort, its not actually that hard.
METU Physics is one of the best physics departments in the country, and even in the world. Its academic staff and the opportunities it offers will more than satisfy students. When choosing physics, you should have an interest in research and shouldnt get bored easily. Unlike engineering, its not just about solving existing problems — you also need to generate new problems and new solutions. You need to read a lot of papers, understand what you read, and build on top of it. I probably dont need to say this, but you should also have a solid grasp of mathematics.
In the first years, you will take general physics courses: mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, and so on. But in the last two years, you will mostly choose courses from whichever physics subfield interests you, and graduate with a certain concentration. You dont need to pick a subfield right away — in the first two years youll take introductory courses from most subfields anyway.
People who probably shouldnt study physics:
Those who get bored quickly,
Those who dont understand mathematics,
Those not open to new ideas,
Those who dont enjoy reading.
