METU Mathematics

Faculty of Arts and Sciences

METU Mathematics is one of the most theoretical basic science departments, centered on abstract thinking and proof-based reasoning. Courses such as analysis, algebra, topology, and differential equations form the foundation of the curriculum. Rather than applied problems, the focus is on deeply understanding mathematical structures themselves.

Unlike most engineering courses, the department relies less on numerical computation and more on writing proofs, understanding theorems, and working with abstract concepts. This makes the department both challenging and deeply satisfying for students with a certain kind of mindset.

Graduates may continue into academia, work as quantitative analysts in the finance sector, as software/algorithm developers at technology companies, or in education after obtaining a teaching certificate.

Anyone choosing this department should genuinely enjoy abstract thinking, not shy away from writing proofs, and have the patience to think about a problem for hours at a time.
