METU History examines the past through a critical, source-based method, in a verbally/analytically oriented department. Courses such as Ottoman history, Republican history, world history, and historiography form the foundation of the curriculum.
The department requires extensive reading and source analysis — working with archival documents, primary sources, and academic literature is an important part of the curriculum. Questioning not just "what happened" but "why and how it happened" is the departments core approach.
Graduates may continue into academia, work in archiving and museum/cultural heritage fields, media and publishing, diplomatic/public institutions, or the education sector.
