METU Statistics
Faculty of Arts and Sciences
METU Statistics is built on collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data — a mathematics-heavy department that is increasingly gaining a data science/analytics dimension. Courses such as probability theory, regression analysis, sampling methods, and time series form the foundation of the curriculum.
The department combines theoretical mathematical foundations with application on real datasets — using statistical software (such as R and Python) to perform data analysis is an important part of the curriculum. With the growing importance of data science today, the department is receiving increasing interest both academically and professionally.
Graduates can work as risk analysts/data scientists in banking and finance, as actuaries at insurance companies, in the statistics units of public institutions (such as the Turkish Statistical Institute), or as data analysts at technology companies.
Anyone choosing this department should enjoy mathematics and probability, enjoy working with data, and have an interest in analytical, systematic thinking.
