METU Biology examines living organisms across a broad range, from the cellular level to the ecosystem level, and is one of the basic science departments with the most lab and fieldwork involved. Courses such as cell biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology form the foundation of the curriculum.
The department combines classroom theoretical courses with lab work, and in some courses, fieldwork (such as plant/animal observation). Students spend hours at the microscope while also doing outdoor observation in courses like ecology.
Graduates may continue into academia, work in R&D units at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, in food and environmental testing laboratories, or in research units at public institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
