METU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering

Faculty of Engineering

METU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering is a fairly niche but strongly in-demand engineering department, focused on the exploration, production, and reservoir management of oil and natural gas deposits. Courses such as reservoir engineering, drilling engineering, and production engineering form the foundation of the curriculum.

As one of the few programs in Turkey offering education in this field, the department has a relatively small number of students, which makes classroom relationships fairly close-knit. The curriculum brings together geology, fluid mechanics, and engineering economics — meaning students gain not just technical skills, but also the ability to assess the economic feasibility of projects.

Graduates can work at public institutions such as TPAO, international oil/gas companies (often offering opportunities to work abroad), energy consulting firms, or in academia. Since the sector is global and tied to foreign currency, graduates often have access to international career opportunities.

Anyone choosing this department should have an interest in the intersection of geology and engineering, be open to working abroad or in the field, and be curious about the energy sector.
