METU Computer Engineering is a department thats hard to get into, but not particularly hard to finish. Most students generally graduate without extending their studies. Those who dont usually fall into the trap of thinking "well manage somehow" early on, lose track of things, and stop doing their assignments on time.
You dont really need to know chemistry to study in this department. Physics is needed only a little. So whats left, you ask? Mathematics, and especially logic. The way you study here is different from other departments. For example, in other engineering fields, you dont need to think too hard to calculate the tension in a rope — you just apply f.cosx and get the answer. But its not like that in Computer Engineering. You will be learning many things for the very first time. Your mind stays constantly occupied. Even while walking down the street, part of you is always searching for a solution — because even if the screen turns off, the screen in your head doesnt turn off right away.
The good side of the department is that you have guaranteed employment, and if you want to start a company, you dont need much capital. The bad side is that everyone assumes you understand computers extremely well, while you yourself might not even know how to remove a virus that infected your browser — and end up getting embarrassed and labeled as "what kind of engineer are you." Since most courses have hands-on assignments, you have to watch the years go by constantly trying to keep up with homework.
As for the types who will regret choosing this department:
People who struggle to make decisions,
Those who get sleepy at night,
Those who dont have even a minimal sense of order,
Those obsessed with "becoming someone,"
Those who dislike partnership (there is a lot of teamwork in projects).
By the way, the place youll hang out at most in the department is the cafeteria, run by your "Uncle Yıldırım." Whatever the problem, hes always there for you. Theres no one whos ever set foot in the department without knowing him.
