Aerospace Engineering is one of METUs relatively young but highly sought-after departments. Its no coincidence that its one of the highest-scoring departments in the Faculty of Engineering — both the growth of the aviation and space sector in Turkey and METUs long-established infrastructure in this field (wind tunnels, flight simulation labs) make the department attractive.

Courses in the department cover aerodynamics, flight mechanics, structural analysis, propulsion systems (engine design), and control systems. In other words, you learn to mathematically solve how an aircraft or satellite behaves in the air or in space, how it moves, and what loads it can bear. Its a computation-heavy curriculum built on top of core engineering courses (statics, dynamics, materials science, thermodynamics).

Graduates typically work at Turkeys defense and aerospace industry leaders such as TUSAŞ, Roketsan, and Baykar, or at international firms like Airbus and Boeing. For those inclined toward academia, opportunities for masters and doctoral studies, both domestically and abroad, are quite broad.

Anyone choosing this department should genuinely be curious about physics and mathematics, and enjoy thinking in three dimensions. Knowing that your signature will be on something that flies or goes to space is one of the most motivating aspects of the department — but you shouldnt let that excitement lead you to underestimate the workload, since it has one of the most demanding curricula in the Faculty of Engineering.
