METU Elementary Mathematics Education

Faculty of Education

METU Elementary Mathematics Education, part of the Faculty of Education, trains teachers who will teach mathematics at the elementary and middle school level (generally grades 5-8). Alongside mathematics courses (algebra, geometry, calculus), pedagogical approaches to how mathematics should be explained to children/teenagers form an important part of the curriculum.

The department provides both mathematical content knowledge and educational science courses such as teaching methods, assessment and evaluation, and classroom management. In the final years, students complete a real teaching practicum at a school.

Graduates can work as mathematics teachers at public or private schools, be appointed to Ministry of National Education positions after the relevant civil service exam (KPSS), or work in areas such as developing educational materials or private tutoring.

Anyone choosing this department should love mathematics while also enjoying explaining it to others, be patient, and be open to working with children/teenagers.
