METU Mathematics Education

Faculty of Education

METU Mathematics Education, part of the Faculty of Education, trains teachers who will teach mathematics at the high school level (grades 9-12). Alongside advanced mathematics courses such as algebra, geometry, and calculus, pedagogical approaches to how these topics should be explained to students form an important part of the curriculum.

The department provides both deep mathematical content knowledge and educational science courses such as teaching methods, assessment and evaluation, and classroom management. In the final years, students complete a real teaching practicum at a high school — meaning you are a student on one hand, and an instructor standing in front of the classroom on the other.

Graduates can work as mathematics teachers at public or private high schools, be appointed to Ministry of National Education positions after the relevant civil service exam (KPSS), work in private tutoring, or move into fields such as developing educational materials.

Anyone choosing this department should love mathematics while also genuinely enjoying explaining it to others, be patient, and not be uncomfortable speaking in front of a group.
