METU Mining Engineering

Faculty of Engineering

METU Mining Engineering is a department that brings together geology and engineering, focused on the exploration, extraction, and processing of underground and surface mineral resources. Courses such as ore deposits, mineral processing, mine operations, and blasting techniques form the foundation of the curriculum.

The department combines classroom/lab work with fieldwork (mine site visits, field studies). It is an appealing department for students who enjoy working closely with nature and field conditions; similar to geological engineering, it offers a career profile more suited to fieldwork/operations settings than to a closed office environment.

Graduates can work at mining companies, public institutions (the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources), mining consulting firms, or in academia. Given Turkeys rich mineral resources, employment opportunities in this field remain fairly stable.

Anyone choosing this department should enjoy being close to nature, be able to handle field conditions, and be curious about the technical topics at the intersection of geology and engineering.
